To God Be The Glory!

A Word From Our Pastor

Thought for the Month: July 2010
"He said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house."

(Judges 6:15)

When Gideon was called to deliver Israel from Midian, he protested the call.

"My family is poor." Like many, Gideon thought money was what he needed to solve Israel's problems. But Israel's problem was not something money could solve. Many of our  problems cannot be solved by money. In fact, if your problems can be solved by money, your problems are not very big problems. Money is not a great problem-solver. Our government, of course, has not learned this truth yet and probably never will. When a problem comes up, they simply throw money at it. But the Word of God reminds us that money is not the answer to all of our problems. Gideon could not have solved Israel's problems with money. He needed more than that; he needed God and God had promised to be with him. So lack of money was not a valid protest about his call.

"I am the least in my father's house." Gideon was the low man in the family. He had little status, rank, and position. He was not a V.I.P. as a matter of fact, he was unknown, a nobody. But as a great English preacher once said, "We need not be socially great to be spiritually useful." However, this truth about not needing fame is not readily accepted.  Even some of our churches do not accept it.  They think that they must bring in a celebrity to say a good word for God in order to attract a crowd. However, we do not need famous people to have a good Sunday at church and to experience great blessings in the church services. We need people of faith, not people of fame. Gideon could be a man of faith even if he was not a man of fame. Fame was not essential to his calling, but faith certainly was. In fact, Gideon would not become a man of fame until he became a man of faith. To do his calling, Gideon needed to look at what God was and not at what Gideon was.

Be blessed and encouraged,

Pastor Thomas
